Required vs. Optional Coverage for New Authorities

Know exactly what you must have before you move your first load.

✅ Required to Operate

Primary Auto Liability Minimum $750K for general freight. Required by FMCSA. Must be on file before you can operate under your MC number.
MCS-90 Endorsement Filing A federal endorsement that confirms your insurer will pay FMCSA-minimum limits regardless of any policy defenses.
BMC-91 or BMC-91X Filing Your insurer must file this form with the FMCSA to certify your coverage is in place. We handle this for you.

Motor Truck Cargo Required by most freight brokers before they'll give you a load. Protects the freight you haul.
!
Physical Damage If you have a loan on your truck, your lender requires it. Even if not, it protects your biggest investment.

Your Path from MC Number to First Load

Here's what the first few weeks as a new authority typically look like.

1
Day 1–2

FMCSA Issues Your MC Number

Your Motor Carrier number is assigned. You now have a 10-day waiting period for your authority to become "active." This is the perfect time to shop for insurance.

2
Day 2–7

Get Insurance Quotes (Now)

Submit your info to us. Our agents will shop your risk across carriers that accept new authorities. You'll receive quotes within 24–48 hours and can bind as soon as you're ready.

3
Day 7–10

Bind Policy & File with FMCSA

Once you select your policy, your agent binds coverage and files the BMC-91/MCS-90 with the FMCSA electronically. This typically clears within 1–3 business days.

4
Day 10+

Authority Activates — You're Ready to Haul

Your authority becomes active, insurance filings are confirmed, and you can legally pick up your first load. Welcome to the open road!

New Authority FAQ

Why is new authority insurance more expensive?
Insurance carriers price based on risk. Without a track record, they have no claims history to evaluate — so new authorities are considered higher risk and pay higher premiums.
Can I get coverage the same day I apply?
In many cases, yes. Once an agent has your information and can underwrite your risk, same-day or next-day binding is possible. The FMCSA filing takes an additional 1–3 business days to show as confirmed.
Which carriers will insure a brand-new MC number?
Not all carriers do. Our agents work with carriers that specifically have programs for new authorities — including some that go down to 0 months in business with the right driver background.
Do I need a DOT physical to get insurance?
No. A current medical certificate is required to drive commercially, but insurance carriers don't require it to bind a policy. You will need a valid CDL and MVR review.
What documents do I need to get a quote?
Typically: your MC/DOT number, CDL number, truck VIN and year/make/model, intended operating radius, and cargo type. An agent can start the quoting process with just a few details and gather the rest.
